10 Things to Know Before Visiting Mozambique

Essential tips and insider knowledge to help you prepare for your Mozambique adventure and make the most of your stay.

Planning your first trip to Mozambique? This stunning East African nation offers pristine beaches, world-class diving, and warm hospitality. Here are 10 essential things to know before you arrive to help you make the most of your adventure.

1. Visa Requirements

Most visitors can obtain a visa on arrival at Maputo International Airport or the South African border. The tourist visa costs approximately $50 USD and is valid for 30 days. Ensure your passport has at least 6 months validity and several blank pages. Some nationalities may require a visa in advance, so check with your local Mozambican embassy before traveling.

2. Currency and Cash

The local currency is the Mozambican Metical (MZN). While US Dollars and South African Rand are accepted in tourist areas, it's best to have local currency for smaller purchases. ATMs are available in larger towns like Inhambane, but can be unreliable. Bring sufficient cash, especially if staying in Tofo where ATM access is limited.

"Always carry cash in smaller denominations. Many local vendors and restaurants don't have change for large bills." - Experienced traveler

3. Language

Portuguese is the official language of Mozambique. While many people in the tourism industry speak English, learning a few basic Portuguese phrases will enhance your experience and endear you to locals. "Bom dia" (good morning), "Obrigado/a" (thank you), and "Por favor" (please) go a long way.

4. Getting to Tofo

Most international travelers fly into Maputo or Johannesburg. From there, you can:

  • Take a domestic flight to Inhambane (highly recommended for convenience)
  • Drive from Maputo (approximately 6-7 hours)
  • Use the bus service from Maputo to Inhambane, then taxi to Tofo

We can arrange airport transfers and transportation from Inhambane to Sonambulas - just let us know your arrival details in advance.

5. Best Time to Visit

Mozambique has two main seasons:

  • Dry Season (May - October): Cooler temperatures, less humidity, perfect for diving and whale watching. This is peak season.
  • Wet Season (November - April): Warmer weather, occasional rain showers, excellent for whale shark encounters and quieter beaches.

Tofo is a year-round destination, so there's no bad time to visit!

6. Health and Safety

Mozambique is generally safe for tourists, but take common-sense precautions:

  • Malaria prophylaxis is recommended - consult your doctor
  • Drink bottled or filtered water
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen (the sun is strong!)
  • Keep valuables secure and don't walk alone at night
  • Ensure you have comprehensive travel insurance

7. Connectivity

WiFi is available at most accommodations in Tofo, though it may be slower than you're used to. Mobile coverage is generally good, and you can purchase a local SIM card (Vodacom or Movitel) for data if needed. Embrace the opportunity to disconnect and enjoy the natural beauty around you!

8. Respect Local Culture

Mozambique is a conservative, predominantly Christian country. While beachwear is fine on the beach, dress modestly when visiting towns or villages. Always ask permission before photographing people, and be respectful of local customs and traditions.

9. Food and Dining

Mozambican cuisine is a delicious blend of African, Portuguese, and Indian influences. Must-try dishes include:

  • Peri-peri prawns (Tofo specialty!)
  • Matapa (cassava leaves in peanut sauce)
  • Fresh grilled fish
  • Chamussas (samosas)
  • 2M or Laurentina beer (local brews)

Vegetarian options are available but may be limited in smaller restaurants. At Sonambulas, we can accommodate all dietary requirements with advance notice.

10. What to Pack

Essential items for your Mozambique adventure:

  • Light, breathable clothing (cotton and linen work best)
  • Swimwear and reef shoes
  • Sun protection: hat, sunglasses, and reef-safe sunscreen
  • Insect repellent
  • Light rain jacket (if traveling in wet season)
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Power adapter (South African plug type M)
  • Torch/flashlight for evening walks
  • Any prescription medications (pharmacies are limited)
